"the evening wreaked of success on all counts and I believe it ranks as one of the top 5 Steak Night experiences we've had since beginning the tradition in April of 2007"

After over 3 years away from this steakhouse in the thick of downtown – on the 37th gathering of Steaks, Cigars & Dreams – the distinguished gentlemen gathered for another unforgettable night.

Upon our arrival, it was obvious that it was going to be special: the maiter d’, hostesses and cocktail waitresses in the bar were all quick to ask “who’s ‘The Drunk Idiot’” and “why can’t you drive 55?” They did their homework and were excited to engage in what has become a Chicago tradition second to none. Live jazz emenating from the corner, a drunken face sucking session and a menage a trois in the making added to the “ambiance” at the bar.

This time we were walked through our sides promptly after their arrival: the oysters rockefeller, pesto risotto fritters and calamari were highlights. Wedges, chopped and caprese salads were terrific. When the steaks finally arrived, no one was disappointed; the 22oz Bone-In “Cowboy” Ribeyes stole the show though everyone else seemed more than satisfied.

While we did not have the opportunity to retire upstairs for cigars due to the city ordinance imposed since out last visit, the decision was quickly made to stay at Sullivan’s and close out the evening in style. The waitresses continued their friendly banter and served several more rounds. While I was the winner at the dinner table, the tab at our after dinner drinks made up for it.

In short, the evening wreaked of success on all counts and I believe it ranks as one of the top 5 Steak Night experiences we’ve had since beginning the tradition in April of 2007. Thank you, Sullivan’s.

Faithfully yours,
Holingwa

The steaks are perfectly prepared and full of flavor, particularly their signature bone in filet. Solid sides especially the creamed corn and Jennie’s mashed potatoes.

Special guest Ryan “Balanaby” Ray joined Chicago’s finest gentleman for the evening and was instantly envious of our Thursday meetings of meat.

Solid service, even offering Balanaby some free key lime pie upon learning it was his virgin trip to Joe’s. Brad finally walked free and Balanaby thought his birthday was in May until he was introduced to a steak night tradition.

Cole was given a new guy reprieve and only paid half the pre dinner drink tab as a penalty of violating rule #4. Scotty picked up the rest, perhaps because of our special guest. Thank you gentleman.

A Chicago classic was revisited with much to celebrate. Brad made it home from SA intact, Don and Hans became homeowners, and Scotty’s boys can swim. The last go around at this venerable establishment saw only half the crew assembled so this time we came with the full squad to make our presence known. Holinger was relieved of wine duties after the vicious abuse done to all our credit cards last time at the hands of the sommelier. The appetizers proved to be excellent as usual only out done by the steaks. In general my steak was perfectly prepared and in the end got the best of me, one of very few instances in which steak remained on the plate. It should also be noted that I do not recall excessive blackberry use by JG but I will allow the rest of the group to weigh in on that. Onward to August!
