Bavette’s – To be the best, you gotta beat the best

That was quote was in honor of Ric Flair, the most recent recipient of 30 for 30 honor on ESPN.  And the quote fits like a glove.  I’ll keep this short and sweet being that it’s just a filler post at this point.   While some had bad orders, those of us who chose wisely and got a wet-aged steak to ourselves had an outstanding meal.  Every appetizer, every side, & every drink was exquisite.  Every dog can have it’s day with a steak, but there is no restaurant which can come close to hitting on every cylinder like Bavette’s does.  Conversation was lively.  Wait staff was on point as usual with the right amount of attention and knowing their customer.  You will never feel like a tourist here.  But you will feel like a glutton.  It was amazing that even in Hans’ absence he still managed to eat all of the elote style corn.

  1. I love Bavettes. I love it as a Steak House and I love it as just a restaurant. The atmosphere is great, service excellent and food/cocktails sublime. For this go around, however, my steak was just OK. I went wet-aged as, like Mr. Cizzle, I am presently fading dry aged steaks – and it was just OK. Compared it to a few of the others guy’s cuts and the consensus was it was off. No one could quite pin down how, why, but it wasn’t Bavette’s best effort. That said I had a wonderful dining experience as always. The sides and apps are great. The Corn Etoile is likely one of the best sides in the city of Chicago.

Our friend mason had a bit of an education on the nature of a dry-aged – a 42 day dry aged at that. His inquisitive nature handled the discussion just the right way with the server and the server handled it as such.

    Great night, great restaurant.

  2. Bavette’s has always been a personal favorite, along with Joe’s perhaps the best steak place in the city. We had to audible for pre-dinner drinks to Highline because the bar at Bavette’s is pretty small and we couldn’t find any real estate. Joe’s has a crappy bar too, what’s up with the best steak places having bad bars?

Anyway the meal was fantastic. The shrimp de jonge is great and dipping your bread in the left over sauce is arguably the best part of the meal, especially when you are starving at the beginning of the meal. I went with the wet aged bone in Ribeye and it was perfect. The Elote corn is one of the best sides in the city and don’t sleep on the mashed potatoes, not fancy but delicious. Top notch meal all around and top notch service all around and the unique atmosphere is always excellent too. In addition to great food, their old fashion is top tier. The only compliant about Bavette’s is the tables are too dam small and crowded. We had 5 people and there is just no leg room and you are rubbing elbows with the person next to you, really tight and it probably didn’t help that the two tallest guys were sitting next to each other.

Dinner conversation was great too. Even touching on politically charged topics, like gun control in a productive civilized way. The rest of the country and the politicians could take a que from the group about how to have healthy debate and discussion. FYI, if you pick a girl up in a bar and she has her bike with her you can place it in the trunk of the cab however there is an $8 up charge. Not sure if the charge is legit or he was taking advantage of drunk people.

Overall a great steak night for the second month in a row. We are back on track after a subpar Summer.
