Gibson’s – That’s more like it…..
After a less than stellar performance from Del Frisco’s in January, February brought us back to one of Chicago’s finest and most trusted institutions, Gibson’s Steakhouse and it did not disappoint. While we were missing Jevon and Don this month, we were lucky to have Roddy back for the event and he sure picked a good one to come back for.
On a snowy night in the city, Roddy and I were first to arrive. We secured a nice table in the middle of the bar area and were soon joined by the rest of the crew. Jonathan was responsible for drinks this time around and he paid without any argument.
We sat down, on time I might add, and were immediately greeted by our TWO waiters, a pair of Rich’s. It was amazing to see how a real professional waiter operates. In addition to just having a good personality, joking around, etc, he was constantly scanning our plates and drink glasses to see what needed to be taken care of.
We started off with some oysters, and crabmeat avocado for appetizers. Both were delicious. Salads and soups also went around. I stuck with just the salad and it was standard but exactly how a salad should be. I’ll note the house made blue cheese dressing was probably the tops I’ve ever had.
For the main course, as usual, I went with the bone in filet and it was tremendous. I think I might have had a better steak before but that’s not to say anything bad about this one. I think it can probably hold a candle to anywhere in the city on the right night.
Sides were outstanding. We had the usual creamed spinach, mushrooms, and a double baked potato which all went down with much fanfare.
This happened to be Scotty’s birthday and he was awarded with a monstrous slice of Chocolate Mousse Pie and Ice Cream.
This really was an unforgettable experience. There’s a reason that Gibson’s is so popular and it should be. Great food and great service in a classic Chicago steakhouse setting.

Well, a redemption song was needed, and boy did we get one. Beset in a snowy eve, and with an old staple back to join us from the hectic throws of NYC, the evening was set up rather perfectly.
Brad Ray and I managed to scoop a chariot (well, his personal one) down to the restaurant and descend on the venue. I have to admit, while I was excited about the choice from Cizzle, I was not expecting a dinner for the steak night annals.
It was nice to be back in a place that looks, acts, and delivers like a true steakhouse. There are reasons that tourists and locals alike frequent a place like this. As mentioned in the recap, the apps were well chosen and liked by the group, as were the steaks (bone-in ribeye medium rare for me) and sides. What stood out to me this eve were the two Rich’s and their stagehands that catered to our every need. Never once did I have an empty wine glass or watered down ketel soda. These two guys would approach, scan the table terminator style, and get us what we needed or lacked. Pretty damn impressive.
Adding to the joy was that it was my birthday and again I got into the final 3 for cc roulette only to lose out as the game got tight. All in all, it was a great spot to rally the cause and look forward to building on the momentum next month!
Always a great excuse to make the trip to Chicago. Perfect weather for February, I was happy to have an umbrella from my hotel in tow.
Drinks led to a wedge salad, followed by a perfect, if a little on the rare side, filet. Excellent sides, excellent service from the two Riches. Interesting to learn they have their own USDA certification – best steak I’ve had since the last time I was in town.
Enjoyed Scotty’s birthday cake – great to catch up with Chicago’s finest!
Excellent evening, night started off hot with a great come from behind victory for the underdog illini over the #1 ranked Indiana Hoosiers and got better from there. Steaks were perfect, service was over the top, jokes were made and people even had enough left in the tank to try and get drinks elsewhere.
What more can a boy ask for?
Special visit from Roddy was cherry on top.
Overall: 9
P.S. Hope everyone enjoyed the drinks, I thought I had some other bad habits that are expensive that I should kick, not posting is quickly getting up there.
I had never been to Gibson’s. I have been to just about all of the steak places in Chicago, many of them multiple times. It seems impossible but some how the legendary Chicago landmark was a place I never dined. Luckily the February edition of steak night (also the second day of Brad-a-pa-looza) was at the iconic viagra triangle establishment. It was worth the wait.
Gibson’s really has a classic feel. All the pictures of celebrities that have dined here through the years adorn the wall and add to the atmosphere. They almost say, “if these wall could talk the stories they would tell you”, very cool classic old school vibe.
The service could not have been better. I like the idea of older waiters that have worked at the establishment for 25 years. Honestly some of if not the best service we have ever had, really added to the night. The steak was just phenomenal. The sides were standard but delicious. The cartoon sized chocolate cake was a delight. The one complaint is that the dining room is a little tight and the tables are kind of close together but it opened up a bit as the night moved on. Overall I loved my virgin Gibson’s experience.
Being that it was Brad-a-pa-looza there was a large number in attendance for after dinner drinks, a little snow is not enough to cancel that.
I almost pulled a Glick and didn’t post in time. Getting this in awfully close to the deadline.
On to March.
“I LOVE it when that happens!”
The February edition, 2013, is what Steak Night is about: great company, fully interactive/attentive service and phenomenal steaks.
Gibson’s has been a staple of the Gold Coast – actually, Chicago – for so long and it’s no surprise. The bar area is jam packed with a cornucopia of people old and young. The waitress we had was pleasant and a bit frisky which eased the group into the night (so did the gimlets, for me). Illinois game coming to an end in favor of our boys to the South just as we were heading to the table was fantastic.
All else has been stated already: outstanding service paired with apps, wine, steaks and sides that are truly second to none. This place has still got it after all these years.
Gibson’s makes me a proud Chicagoan.
There will likely be some controversy over whether this is posted on time — after the 2 weeks of the dinner, well within the two weeks of the post. Rick Ray will be sure to have an opinion.
Day 2 of Brad-a-palooza found us at Chicagos classic steak establishment, Gibsons. I had not been to Gibsons in some time, however must admit previous experiences were good, but not great. Scotty Markets and I arrived on a snowy night to see Cizzle and one Roddy Richards at the bar — great to have Roddy back in the fold. Crowded and bustling, it took a little bit for us to be shown to our table. Once we were, the night took off. The service was the best we have had during steak night. Rich and rich were all over it like white on rice — mindful of every nuance helped make the dinner a great experiences. Oysters were delicious and the wedge was great — best blue cheese ever. I got my classic rib eye and the Gibsons grade USDA steak was perfect. Scottie’s birthday — I am a little surprised they did not bring a head shot of him to the table with the dessert to have him sign for the wall.
All around great evening…9.5.
