Keefer’s

An old fav was revisited by a handful of Chicago’s finest gentlemen and Jon Glick as well.  Martin was a no-show again (even on his own pick) but was able to grab a bite or two of redemption in ordering some dessert and a birthday for the fellas.

  1. I heard I missed a great time and Holinger you know your sommaliers well. I was weary sending you guys somewhere in my name but I was able to get a reservation there for a couple weeks from now so I’m glad to see you managed to not totally kill my fine reputation.

  2. I do what I can. Liked the spot, dinner was solid…creamed spinach was a little weak but all in all a good time. Can’t wait for the summer to start and the rowdiness to follow.

  3. Keefers is a classic. While not the most refined wait staff, they were attentive and were Johnny on the spot with club soda for my stained shirt. The steak, in typical Keefer’s fashion, was cooked to perfection. The potatoes croquets are an original you don’t get at any other steak joint in Chicago — I always enjoy those. We voted to bring back one Donald Cole, which was long overdue. Looking forward to July 1 where we will have a full crowd and one jet-lagged B. Ray.

  4. one more thing…..motion to pass a new rule outlawing text messaging at the table. john Glick is the only person I know who can tell the table he doesn’t like the wine ordered — he wanted something lighter then a big red for his steak — order a different bottle and get distracted by his phone and a smoke when it is time to taste it…..

  5. In spite of my late arrival, Keefer’s delighted. Upon finding my place setting overrun by sides, the fellas not only made room, they promptly loaded up a bread plate with select cuts from 3 different types of steak. All were delectable; especially the peppered action of Mr. Fedderke.
And then came the crab and avocado salad. A perfect surf and turf experience.
Happy birthday Hans and Jevon, you were very gracious to let H take center stage. Happy birthday to you, too.

  6. Indeed a fine meal….

I was tardy in joining as a result of softball, not acceptable.

I take issue with being put in a backroom, at a kids sized table, while being ignored by the waitstaff. Still, it was a top 3 steak and as always, the company was delightful.

I motion that $10 is added to Glick’s check every time he checks his mobile device.

Look forward to having Don Cole join our ranks

  7. I must admit I came into the evening spitting fire in regards to the general malaise that has befallen our fine group. In the good ole days there was not even a question about attending steak night. You have one night a month locked into your calendar and thats the way it is, however it seems this has slipped in recent months. Of course we are all busy and have a number of outside commitments but I motion we all re-commit to steak night as something that is set in stone when it comes to planning out our schedules.

Okay now onto the evening. The steak was blessed by the miracle of a pepper crust that couldnt have been better for both spice and the perfect compliment to the fine cut of meat. The appetizers and sides all paled in comparison to the steak until the birthday dessert platter arrived. I am not a big dessert guy but this was a damn fine selection.

The attempt at going out for an after dinner drink to watch the basketball game was foiled by ‘Theory” a weak attempt at blending nightclub and sports bar, not recommended.

I was planning to go on a diatribe about cell phone use and propose a ban however I was tardy in my post and I think the general concept has been explored. I do have a feeling in spite of any ban enacted there shall be either under the table cell phone use by one JG or spontaneous twitching from withdrawl. We shall see when we descend upon Smith and Wollensky’s July 1st for a second go around this time sans sommelier….

  8. Scotty’s line about Glick in the opener looks eerily similar to a line from my Saloon review. Don’t go all Carlos Mencia on me Martin.

I actually had the opportunity to arrive at 7:00 for drinks since I was in the city instead of the burbs. I must say that drinking vodka is much better then sitting in traffic. It was a light pre dinner group-only Brad and Hans were able to join me.

You never get a bad steak at Keefer’s; once again it was cooked to perfection. Absolutely delicious. I always like when there is a unique side on the menu and the potato croquets are a Keefer’s original. There was nothing wrong with the service but it did not stand out either.

Glick once again is the epitome of the term “crackberry”. Do you have lesbian footage of Anna Kournikova and Gisele Bundchen on that thing? Why can’t you stop looking at it for 5 seconds?

There was a halfhearted attempt to go out for drinks and watch the NBA finals after dinner; we stayed for about 10 minutes. I certainly hope there is a better showing in July; there are parking garages to get locked in.

Welcome back Don “ET Fingers” Cole.
