Joe’s Seafood, Prime Steak & Stone Crab-The Sequel

A return trip to Joe’s does not disappoint. In a city full of unbelievable steak places Joe’s stands out. Where else can you get stone crabs to start the meal? The steaks are perfectly prepared and full of flavor, particularly their signature bone in filet. Solid sides especially the creamed corn and Jennie’s mashed potatoes.

Special guest Ryan “Balanaby” Ray joined Chicago’s finest gentleman for the evening and was instantly envious of our Thursday meetings of meat.

Solid service, even offering Balanaby some free key lime pie upon learning it was his virgin trip to Joe’s. Brad finally walked free and Balanaby thought his birthday was in May until he was introduced to a steak night tradition.

Cole was given a new guy reprieve and only paid half the pre dinner drink tab as a penalty of violating rule #4. Scotty picked up the rest, perhaps because of our special guest. Thank you gentleman.

  1. Sorry to have missed this one. Sounds like good times and Brad can no longer complain of never winning. Nice job posting so soon, Mr. Rick Ray.

  2. Let it be known that Don and I arrived first and with nobody there (including the host) we bolted down the street for the calm and anonymity of a deserted Sushi bar. When we came back to Joe’s at 15 minutes till dinner, we found 3 inebriated Ray boys. As a thank you to Don for some sound (as always) legal advice I did move to help him with the inflated pre-dinner bar tab that could have only been at the hands of Ole Gims and his henchmen.

  3. Joe’s, one of the best in the city. My personal favorite. If I could muster one critique about Joe’s in general, it would be the bar area is too small and unless you get a table you are in cramped quarters. However, that is a bit nit picky and what they lack in space they make up for with quality gimlets.

The service at Joe’s, always the tops. Our stone crab claws were fabulous and the mustard sauce they make is fit to chug. The blue cheese wedge was outstanding, even if it was an over order in terms of food quantity. My rib-eye was cooked to perfection. I am not sure what Joe’s does differently, they just season with salt and pepper, but they do it better then anyone. the flavor was amazing.

Our table was not 100% desirable, in the corner by the wait station. however we made do with that.
Scotty was a bit over served and as a result was making trouble with the waiter claiming something along the lines of “my steak is good, but it is not medium rare like I ordered…whatever”. Naturally, due to his inebriated state, he was full of shit. we took a table vote and the verdict swung overwhelmingly to “Scotty is drunk and being an ass”. However, we love our fox bulls and bears panelist anyway.

Good to have balanaby aboard, he enjoyed his first steak night experience.

    until next time

  4. ahhh yes, I did walk free….didn’t I! an even better night!!!

  5. Normally you don’t post again if you are the postmaster but I guess I have more to say then “great food, great guys”. It seemed more appropriate to post the additional thoughts here rather then in the opening.

Based on Scotty’s performance at the table (clearly outlined in Ole Gimms post) it is probably a good thing he was not at the bar early with “three inebriated Ray boys”. It should be noted that as soon as Scotty arrived at the bar we immediately started making fun of his sunglasses. I don’t know if this was because of all the drinks or because the glasses are in fact terrible.

Brad, Scotty, Balanaby, Glick and myself all went to Hub 51 for after dinner drinks and stayed out until about 1:00. There has been a senior citizen like performance in this area recently so it was a nice way to cap off the evening.

The September steak night falls before a holiday weekend. The batting order has been updated on the website. Using your best Bob Sheppard voice-Now batting for Chicago’s finest gentleman Chris Holinger.

  6. Well, I almost did it again, but I’m just under the wire. With that said, this post shall be memorable because a) it is my first; and b) Joe’s offered up the best steak i’ve had all year!

Although the memory is a little fuzzy as to all that transpired, I can say, uneqivocally, that the meal was truly memorable. Perhaps part of it is due to the fact that this steak night happened to come on the hills of my anniversary dinner, where the chef was determined to make me pay for all of my past marital transgressions by serving up a god-awful “steak.” Or, and most likely, it was the fact that everyone was in such a grand mood and on their best behavior (thanks Balanaby) – even though Scotty and I were the only ones on-time for once!

Regardless, the steak was cooked perfectly (what’s that Scotty, you wanted well-done, right?). The service was fantastic, although our waiter could put some extra work in on his card-shuffling skills – who shuffles out, in the open like that?

I’m glad to be back in the fold. Next time, this post will definitely come on the heels of the outing; the only reason i’m able to cobble these sentences together is of the fond memory of such a “perfectly cooked piece of meat” (oh wait, that’s what Blago’s cellmates would have said had people not interjected their own understanding of “Politics as Usual”).

  7. Solid night w the youngest Ray as an honored guest. We crushed the crab and steaks and (surprise surprise) was embarassed to be the first guy out of the bar. Looking forward to the next night
