Rosebud Steakhouse Part II
We have taken this establishment through its paces once before and unfortunately for us Rosebud underperformed. Having had some positive dining experiences in the past, I wanted to give it one more go with the steak crew before casting final judgment.
I like the décor, classic steakhouse with mahogany tones and red leather seats. A sign above the bar reads “A rare steakhouse well done”; not a bad little mantra. I wouldn’t recommend spending too much time in the bar area of Rosebud – not nearly enough room and you end up bumping into diners at close tables.
There are some elements I really enjoyed with Rosebud, others not as much. I thought the service was attentive and the table provided us with plenty of space. Especially for the first hour since Don showed at 8:45 and Hollinger around 9. Poor form gents, poor form. Despite the staggered seating I think the wait staff did a nice job.
The apps in my opinion were great. jumbo coconut shrimp, jumbo bacon wrapped BBQ scallops and malpeq oysters were delicious. We ordered 18 oysters and they brought 30 which was a nice gratis touch. Maybe that was to make up for the $16 shrimp and scallops (only three per portion).
Each steak at Rosebud is served with a decorative bone packed with rosemary and little hints of bone marrow. I don’t care for rosemary so I did not partake. I went with my traditional Bone-in Rib eye or the “Chicago” cut as they call it. It was cooked as ordered, medium rare, but was not the best steak. I found parts of the meat to be a bit tough and there was not much marbling in this piece.
Where I feel Rosebud stood out was the side dishes. Bacon cheddar mashed, cream of spinach and lobster Mac and cheese were all a big hit. It was my birthday and Scotty Markets walked free. Of note is Rick Ray is the only person yet to have a free dinner.
Until next month…..

Despite the tardy arrivals mentioned above was a very very solid evening. Steaks sides and apps were all top notch. After dinner drink at Stanley’s was fun and could have been a great success if Reeshard had been willing to jump on the grenade. All in all a great night.
Jevon – you got your work cut out for you.
Cramped bar area led the gentlemen who were on time to get to know each other a little better than they may have desired. A late arrival by two members (one of whom is the latest addition to the group, the other being the one who vehemently shot down a request for a guest to join the group for the evening) made the evening quite poetic with the final stanza being me walking free. I must say I deserved it.
Was sorry to arrive late, but made up for it immediately with a couple stiff drinks to slap me out of my work-induced stupor.
Unfortunately I got in on the seafood platter late – the 2 oysters I did have left some to be desired. Agree with the host that the cuts were not the quality I expected, though it was still good. Sides were rich and tasty.
Stanley’s after Steak Night = never again. Even on a baby Friday and during the kickoff to the Hawks season, they couldn’t fill the place.
I must say I was blown away by the sides, which is a first. Typically they compliment the steak and provide a nice intermission from mouthfuls of meat (yep i said mouthfuls of meat). On this particular occasion every single side dish rose to the level this group really should expect. The coconut shrimp were excellent as an app, but dramatically overpriced. I think they were trying to make up for our shitty table in the entrance with the over service of oysters. I suppose it was an adequate apology. The wine was well selected and remained out of the holingwa $$ range. I arrived to the evening late due to Obama traffic. By late I mean 730pm and was surprised to find myself alone at the bar with a couple of old dudes and this woman that was also old but had made numerous plastic attempts at disguising this fact. It is a continuing disappointment to me the tardiness for what is truly one of the best nights of every month. But I digress. On to next month and another steak.
Stanleys, I boo thee.
It states Rosebud Steakhouse Part II but I don’t recall coming here with Chicago’s finest gentleman.I remember we went to Rosebud Prime because Hans threw up in the bathroom and Brad showed up at the wrong Rosebud and was sitting at the bar by himself.
I arrived around 7:45 because I was caught up in the Obama madness and when I say that I don’t mean traffic. I actually had to make a quick stop at the event and meet with the President, as he was appointing me “Sports Fashion Consultant for the United States”.
I agree the coconut shrimp and bbq bacon wrapped scallops were outstanding but they still could not justify the price. I went with the Chicago Cut and although there was nothing wrong with the preparation the steak was just good, not great.
I usually don’t get that caught up in where we are sitting but our table was the worst in the history of steak night. In my opinion showing up before 8:00 is considered on time, showing up significantly after 8:00 is pushing the boundaries of tardiness.
The streak continued, no not Glick not getting laid (although that continued too) but me not walking free.
I enjoyed the after dinner trip to Stanley’s and although it was not packed like it is on Friday and Saturday it had an appropriate crowd for a Thursday night. We were approached by three ladies, two of them cute one of them not so much. It quickly became apparent after chatting with the cute blonde with a boyfriend that they were trying to set up the less attractive friend, I quickly lost interest. I did manage to ruin one girl’s purse, it’s her own fault for putting a sticker on it.
On to November.
