Ocean Prime – New Kid on the Block

Whenever we go somewhere that has been open less than a month it is a bit of a crapshoot.  However, our trip to Ocean Prime did not disappoint.  Situated in a massive space on the second floor on the corner of Wacker and Michigan, the team behind this chain (16 locations across America) has captured the feel of Las Vegas infused with Chicago personality.  Our team of Brad, John, Bill and Hans enjoyed cocktails at a massive bar looking out on the Chicago River.  While we waited for our sixth man, Mason, we were seated at a circular booth in a room that serves as a transition between two large dining rooms.

Our server, Ron, was on point and guided us throughout the evening at a pace that did not prove overly intrusive and instead complimented our demeanor.  At 9pm with no sign of Mason, we embarked on incredible appetizers including east coast oysters, fantastic calamari and a winner take all surf n’ turf with scallops and braised short ribs.

Shortly after 9:15 Mason sauntered in wearing full autographed bulls uniform.  Having taken second place in a charity pop a shot tournament, he could not be taken from the arena.  In good natured fun, we had Ron ask if he would like a drink with dessert.  The team held up the narrative that dinner had come and gone until the steaks arrived.

We had two fumbles on the type of steaks delivered to Hans and Joh, however, Ocean Prime unprompted quickly resolved the situation, comped a shrimp cocktail and took both steaks off the bill.  My NY Strip was terrific, flavored perfectly.  It was one of the better steaks I have had in some time.  The sides were outstanding, led by a bacon creamed spinach that nearly all claimed was the best in Chicago.  Truffled mac n’ cheese was strong and the mashed potatoes held their own.

Our desserts consisted of a butter cake that John said topped what had been best in show at Steak 48.  We also had a towering carrot cake, hold the pineapple syrup, which delighted the crowd.

John took home credit card roulette.  Conversation consisted of a robust dialogue on financial planning and the state of the market.

The service and attention from the general manager was first class all the way around.

Overall, Ocean Prime is a tremendous addition to a crowded Chicago scene.  Look forward to going back again and seeing how they continue to up their game.

  1. After a 3 hour quest to win a signed Wendell Carter Jr. jersey, I unfortunately arrived late and missed the bar banter and apps. I applaud the group for a well-played gag about missing the steaks, and my thanks and apologies for delaying gratification on the excellent main course. I thought the restaurant handled the mix up on the steaks with aplomb, and the staff was pleasant throughout. I look forward to more evenings there.

  2. Usually when we go to a new steakhouse, they’re not running on all cylinders quite yet. Service is disjointed, and food prep can be less than stellar. Although the steak orders were mixed up pretty bad, OP was more than accommodating in getting it corrected, and then deducted from the bill. The “Surf & Turf” app of braised short rib and scallops stood out. All in all, I was pretty impressed by OP and hope to make a repeat appearance here soon.
