A Return to Kinzie Chophouse
A return to the Kinzie Chop House. Probably not the first place that comes to mind when you think steak in Chicago but it’s a nice under the radar spot.
The bar area is located next to the dining room and offers plenty of room, a welcome change from some of the smaller packed bar area of recent months. We were joined for drinks by Sprout’s proud papa who shared pictures of the new lady in his life. Glick also made a brief appearance for drinks to pay his bar tab for violating rule number four. Mr. Glick was smart enough to leave before the group could give him shit for scheduling a date on steak night. Special guest Brian “Four” Cartwright was also in attendance for drinks and joined us for dinner.
The dining room has a classic steak house feel and we were seated at a large booth featuring a rectangle table that made conversation with all members of the group easy. The crowd was surprisingly light for a Thursday night. Perhaps the people of Chicago were trying to honor those New Years resolutions to eat better in 2011 and were home eating tofu sticks. The fine gentleman of steak night will have none of this and will continue to eat meat of the first Thursday of every month
The calamari was light, fluffy and really good while the blacked scallops were excellent. The bone in Delmonico was phenomenal, the best steak I have had since the September visit to Sullivan’s. The sides were good but nothing really deserved to be called out. The hot buttered rum cake was divine.
Holinger walked free again, perhaps passing Glick for most all time. It was Cartwright’s birthday.
There was also a steak night first as Hans became the first person to pass out at the table.
On to February when Scotty “I love it when you call me Sprout’s papa” Martin is up. The batting order has been updated on the website.

Mr Ray – thank you for getting us started.
Kinzie Steakhouse continues to impress. This is my 3rd trip and everytime, I come away happy. The glut of other so-so eating establishments in the area has pulled away some of the crowd – resulting in more attention and a better time for us.
The Aps rival some of our best on records. Risotto cake, oysters, calamari and scallops lead the charge.
Great conversational banter around NFL, BCS and Glick’s date. Although we lost Hans somewhere between ordering steaks and their arrival. Sleeping and mumbling on one end of the table provided good entertainment.
I have been on red meat overload, so I opted for a petite filet. Perfectly done and just the right amount. However, the star of my plate was the creamed spinich. Excellent.
Mr. Cartwright should be involved with more steak evenings.
Mr. Hollinger – In light of your ongoing success in credit card pull, I appreciate you paying for my cab.
Hope we get a full boat in February – Brad – cancel your trip

delmonico was great, i was drunk.
Always a pleasure to dine with Chicago’s finest gentlemen and great to have the first dad of the group join us for a few drinks. We had a nice surprise with a visit from Brian “I ate a chubby blondes face on the dance floor Saturday night” Cartwright. Cart was mostly a quite observer, which was no doubt a show of respect for the “regular” steak crew. I see no reason why Cart should not be a part of our group moving forward. Accept this as a formal motion to include him.
I think Kinzie is one of the most underrated steak houses in Chicago. However, I must say I did enjoy it more the last time around. I am unable to comment on the gimms – the scotch however was a nice pour (thank you Mr. Glick). I thought the service, table and apps were all great. As previously mentioned the crowd was pretty dead. The scallops were my favorite. I allowed the waiter to choose my cut so long as he included the Cajun topping. I was brought a porterhouse that looked great and was seasoned well with Cajun spice. Unfortunately, it was a bit overcooked and more toward the medium than medium rare. I do have to agree with Ol’ Thorzeen in that the creamed spinach was amazing. Dessert, specifically the key lime, was superb. I of course did not walk free, but was happy to see rick still batting 0.00 in that department. I will also provide hans with one clap for passing out at the table. i didn;t see him drink a bottle of bozze from the time we left the bar and got to the table….but it must have happened becasue he went downhill fast. I am also giving him a qtr. clap for the post — that should not count in my opinion.
I will be on the road next month so will miss the Feb excursion, I regret to say.
Gimms
As I stated above the bone in Delmonico was phenomenal, oozing with flavor and prepared perfectly; a really tasty steak.
Holinger and I went to Kirkwood for a night cap and unfortunately the place was kind of dead but there was still some good conversation. Topics included boobs and Wayne Gretzky but not Wayne Gretzky’s boobs which would have been awkward.
My credit card roulette losing streak continued, the only person that has never won. I’m like the Washington Generals of steak night except I’m not losing on purpose.
I agree that Hans lacks some detail in his post but I’m not sure he rememebers anything so I don’t think he is capable of posting anything more. He was hammered.
I agree with formally asking Cart to join.
Bar area is far better than most we’ve been to – with the obvious exception of Sullivan’s with 3 piece jazz band and make-out sessions. Amazing that one of our own is a father.
Bone-in filet was terrific and the sides were able average.

I second the motion for Cart’s addition to the crew.
I bet you guys thought I’d forget to post…true, a lack of sleep and getting peed on for weeks straight might steal one’s concentration. But alas I am committed to the rules and more importantly using my funds for a good cause like diapers and squeeze toys. At any rate, seeing that I have next month’s honors, I am glad to say that I’ll be there stain and baby free.
