Rosebud Steakhouse Part II

We have taken this establishment through its paces once before and unfortunately for us Rosebud underperformed. Having had some positive dining experiences in the past, I wanted to give it one more go with the steak crew before casting final judgment.

I like the décor, classic steakhouse with mahogany tones and red leather seats. A sign above the bar reads “A rare steakhouse well done”; not a bad little mantra. I wouldn’t recommend spending too much time in the bar area of Rosebud – not nearly enough room and you end up bumping into diners at close tables.

There are some elements I really enjoyed with Rosebud, others not as much. I thought the service was attentive and the table provided us with plenty of space. Especially for the first hour since Don showed at 8:45 and Hollinger around 9. Poor form gents, poor form. Despite the staggered seating I think the wait staff did a nice job.

The apps in my opinion were great. jumbo coconut shrimp, jumbo bacon wrapped BBQ scallops and malpeq oysters were delicious. We ordered 18 oysters and they brought 30 which was a nice gratis touch. Maybe that was to make up for the $16 shrimp and scallops (only three per portion).

Each steak at Rosebud is served with a decorative bone packed with rosemary and little hints of bone marrow. I don’t care for rosemary so I did not partake. I went with my traditional Bone-in Rib eye or the “Chicago” cut as they call it. It was cooked as ordered, medium rare, but was not the best steak. I found parts of the meat to be a bit tough and there was not much marbling in this piece.

Where I feel Rosebud stood out was the side dishes. Bacon cheddar mashed, cream of spinach and lobster Mac and cheese were all a big hit. It was my birthday and Scotty Markets walked free. Of note is Rick Ray is the only person yet to have a free dinner.

Until next month…..
