33 Club
To 33 Club, on Wells in Old Town, just down the street from The Fireplace and Mr. Rick Ray’s favorite: Burton Place.
One of our greatest steak nights. The skirt steak appetizer is not to be missed. Great polenta. The crab cake was light in the right way. The mashed potatoes, creamed spinach, mac & cheese and au gratin potatoes were good, though at this level we expect great; they missed. I had the 18oz New York Strip and it was prepared to my satisfaction, although there was a lot of shaking going on as someone else cut into theirs. Maybe it was just the table.
High ceilings, dark wood – the right sort of atmosphere for a steakhouse. It wasn’t all that crowded for a Thursday evening. There were a few larger parties by the staircase. Two floors of service with balconies, semi-tropical plants. A broad staircase. And a now famous banister.
Now, I’m not sure how it all started, and I’m waiting for the video to speak for itself, but what I can say in the meantime is I can’t believe it really happened. And I can’t believe it’s on video.
That broad staircase had 3 banisters, one straight down the middle, maybe 25 feet long. In a moment of sheer wine-inspired heckling, cash hit the table, Mr. Thoresen sprang to life, dancing his way upstairs, testing the strength and quality of said staircase. And then slid down. To the applause and great satisfaction of all.
Well played, sir.
It was both Jevon & Glick’s birthday and I walked free.
