33 Club

To 33 Club, on Wells in Old Town, just down the street from The Fireplace and Mr. Rick Ray’s favorite: Burton Place.

One of our greatest steak nights. The skirt steak appetizer is not to be missed. Great polenta. The crab cake was light in the right way. The mashed potatoes, creamed spinach, mac & cheese and au gratin potatoes were good, though at this level we expect great; they missed. I had the 18oz New York Strip and it was prepared to my satisfaction, although there was a lot of shaking going on as someone else cut into theirs. Maybe it was just the table.

High ceilings, dark wood – the right sort of atmosphere for a steakhouse. It wasn’t all that crowded for a Thursday evening. There were a few larger parties by the staircase. Two floors of service with balconies, semi-tropical plants. A broad staircase. And a now famous banister.

Now, I’m not sure how it all started, and I’m waiting for the video to speak for itself, but what I can say in the meantime is I can’t believe it really happened. And I can’t believe it’s on video.

That broad staircase had 3 banisters, one straight down the middle, maybe 25 feet long. In a moment of sheer wine-inspired heckling, cash hit the table, Mr. Thoresen sprang to life, dancing his way upstairs, testing the strength and quality of said staircase. And then slid down. To the applause and great satisfaction of all.

Well played, sir.

It was both Jevon & Glick’s birthday and I walked free.

  1. Hans and I arrived early and I could see the boozy influence in his early dinner demeanor. My steak was medium when I ordered medium rare, but being next to the lumberjack that was Rick Ray mixed up my vodka sodas purrrrfectly.

  2. I live on the Banister of life!!!

Perhaps there was something in my club soda, or it may have just been my great day at work; either way I felt inspired.

The atmosphere was perfect, great acoustics, deep colors, nice crowd. Although my back was to the room, we had a good table which looked out at the entire landscape. Nice service, with friendly banter (she put up with Hans rough jabs).

Appetizers were delectable; in particular, I was a fan of the lamb lolly pops.

My steak was in my top 3 to date. Cooked perfectly, the 18oz NY Strip offered flavor country.

The sides lacked a certain character and could stand to be upgraded.

Finally, dessert offered a peak into bliss; the peanut brittle in the fudge sundae was what prompted the long walk to the staircase…..

I give the night a 9 and look forward to more escapades.

  3. I dare say you do not win friends with salad and if I was a waitress taking care of our fine group I would refrain from ever beginning to describe such greenery. The steak was heavy on the blue cheese, I think I had a heart attack around the third bite, however persevered to near completion. The banter was fitting of the graceful confines and the appetizers did appease. I would not recommend the sides, but the red velvet is not to be missed. Holingers call of the double espresso chased with a cup of coffee was bold to say the least, however a couple of jameson shots later it appeared to be a good idea. Polishing banisters with one’s shirt is a quick way to a pocket full of 20’s.

  4. Oh and scotty, your vodka sodas may have been swapped with jevons

  5. Back in January Mr. Thorsen made the bold statement that 33 Club would be one of the best steak places we have been. I believe it was the legendary Public Enemy that said, “Don’t believe the hype”. It turns out Flavor Flav was right.

The 33 Club possessed one of the better bar areas of all the places we have dined. Overall I liked the décor, particularly the provocative photos in the men’s room. The straight out of Gone with the Wind staircase was a nice touch in the main dining room and would be the source of entertainment later in the evening. Having a female waitress is always fun because it seems to inspire good natured, perhaps a little obnoxious banter from the group. Hans getting the prize for the one the waitress probably hated most of the group.

The skirt steak and lamp chop appetizers were well received. Although doubling up on the meat appetizers and then eating a steak may have been meat overkill. Perhaps it was not meat overkill and was just a nod to the Scotty Martin special-Steak with a side of pork chops. The lobster bisque was the best part of the meal (you yada’d over the best part, no I mentioned the bisque).

I ordered the porter house medium rare and it was unevenly prepared. Sections were undercooked and sections were over cooked, it possessed an overwhelming charcoal flavor and was a bit chewy. It easily ranks near the bottom of all the steaks I have had.

No matter your thoughts on the meal steak night is always a great evening. This particular steak night more memorable then most compliments of Mr. Thorsen. Despite just indulging in vodka sodas minus the vodka all night there was a certain swagger to Jevon, he was looking to get into something. As he sauntered up the stairs, inspired by Macaulay Culkin in Home Alone the banister didn’t have a chance.

To the surprise of some I did not end up at Burton Place but as I stated early in the evening not on a school night. On to March and as I have previously stated, there is nothing wrong with a repeat.

  6. Epic is a word that I seldom use; February 2010 Steak Night was epic.

33 Club is designed to impress: towering vaulted ceiling, palms adorn the wall and a fine, 25′ tall velvet drape separates the bar from dining area. As mentioned before, the dining room is interesting. While the stairwell serves
as a wonderful centerpiece, the upolstery on the chairs (with handles), deep red walls and a single bright green painting did not strike a pleasent chord for me.

The appetizers were phenomenal, my steak was amazing, but the sides did not deliver.

    8 out of 10.

    MVP goes to Jevon.

  7. sounds like I missed one hell of an evening. I liked the video. I had a porterhouse of my own in New York, keeping with the once a month steak night – which was pretty good.

i am up for March….stay tuned.
