The Capital Grille, Revisited
We’d first experienced The Capital Grille on May 9th, 2008. It’s one of two steak houses in Chicago that have stood out from the crowd for so many reasons (Joe’s being the second).
There’s something remarkable about returning 22 months after dining there for the first time together and being remembered and served by one of the two waitresses who made the first evening there as exceptional as it was (the second stopped by to say “Hi” throughout the evening).
Lamb popsicles and calamari, as perfect as it’s ever been, mixed with the first of 3 bottles of wine. The filet, medium rare, was prepared to my extreme satisfaction. From oscar to porterhouse, with one exception, I believe this was the case for us all. Lobster mac & cheese, au gratin and creamed spinach didn’t disappoint.
Mr. Rick Ray and The Drunken Idiot is a story best left for the comments and the original author, but here’s the flyer:
A little birthday cheesecake and banana cream pie for Mr Glick, possibly the first actual birthday celebrated at Steak Night. Mr. Holinger walked free.
Thanks again for the drinks, Mr. Glick. Very little tastes better than free.

And now for a new game at http://www.steaksandcigars.com THE QUOTE GAME. for those of you playing from home, the goal is to match the quote with the diner.
1. “I wasn’t even on the right street!”
2. “When have you ever had soup envy?”
3. “I just wanted to see how many times I could get f*cked in the a*s in one night.”
4. “Well, that’s proctology and that’s pleasure.”
My filet oscar was divine, the cream spinach was the standout side because it was lighter than most on the cream but still as rich as many. The service was impeccable, many thanks to Brad Ray for biting his tongue despite his obvious desire to skewer me. Glick kept the blackberry below the table for more of the meal than ever before. Despite being a chain, Capitol really doesn’t feel or serve like one. High marks indeed.
Just checked in on the batting order as well, I m up next for Roddy’s swan song steak night. Begin training now boys, its one month away. I suggest taking Friday off.
Picking up the tab at the bar……. $195
Paying for a dinner where my steak was so bad it was comped…..$125
Getting to hear the drunken idiot story and having everyone go out afterwards for a drink…priceless
Sounds like a dandy boys. Wish I had been
You can ask the 1999 New York Yankees or anyone who still tunes in to Seinfeld on a regular basis, repeats can be pretty satisfying. I have been preaching for a while we should start returning to places that we enjoyed the first time because the endless pursuit of a diamond in the rough resulted in to many sub par meals to many months in a row. This month we actually repeated and the meal did not disappoint.
The calamari is some of the best I have ever had and the lamb popsicles put the ones from 33 Club to shame. I ordered the 24-ounce porterhouse and it was perfectly prepared and had tons of flavor. I highly recommend the lobster mac and cheese. This is the type of meal you want and to a degree expect out of Steak Night.
Its always fun when there is a female waitress since it inspires comments from the table. Our server Brandee provided attentive and sassy service and was willing to dish a zinger or an appropriately timed f bomb, which the table appreciated. Brandee was not working with her sister Kristin tonight so the table did not get double-teamed by the sisters as it had on the previous visit. Although Kristin did stop by to ask Hans “why he stopped emailing her” and how she really “would like to go out with him” and “how about a post meal romp in the bathroom”. Despite what Hans may have liked to hear that last sentence was a complete fabrication.
Hot towels are always a nice touch and the atmosphere provided the perfect forum to debut the now legendary “drunk idiot” story.
Thanks for the pre dinner drinks Glick. We need to update the batting order.
Delicious per usual – I hope 22 months don’t go by again before we make it back.
Thanks for logging those quote gems, Hans! Wouldn’t want them to get lost in the shuffle.
Lobster Mac and Cheese, Lobster Bisque and the Delmonico were all worthy of a last meal.
The service, as mentioned, was second to none – was just a sad state when the birthday boy’s steak wasn’t done properly…
Thanks for dinner, fellas!
An amazing night indeed. Any evening that starts off with free gimlits puts a smile on my face — thanks Mr. Glick. High expectations on all fronts moving into Capital Grille steak night #2 — 98% of which were met. Having Brandee as our server again didn’t hurt. Outstanding service goes a long way. While I am not happy the birthday boy’s steak was ice cold in the middle — the Capital Grille staff handled it as appropriate. My steak on the other hand, could not have been prepared better. The apps and sides are second to none. I would go so far as to say the best calamari in the city is right here.
You can always count on reeshard for a crazy story — the “Drunk Idiot” remains one of the best to date. I was hoping hans would have made a move on Kristen for a second time, or at the very least facilitated a warm hand off to reeshard so we could have another story at steak night in april. maybe next time….
Roddy’s local steak night farewell next month. all hands on deck for another great night.
scootie and jevon….you were missed. I have yet to walk free……
